Balancing security with clarity and trust in authentication experiences
Abstract
To stay competitive in the digital ecosystem, businesses need to provide branded, secure, and seamless customer interactions. Microsoft Azure Active Directory offers a robust system for user authentication and account access, but its out-of-the-box experience often falls short of meeting the unique needs of individual businesses and their customers.
Our team partnered with clients to extend Azure Active Directory B2C into a fully customized solution: balancing enterprise-level security with brand expression and thoughtful user experience.
My Contribution
Led research and interaction design for customized Azure Active Directory B2C experiences, translating client requirements into branded, secure authentication flows through wireframes, prototypes, and close collaboration with engineering and security experts.
Azure, out of the box
Microsoft Azure Active Directory B2C allows businesses to apply security controls across their applications. Features like multi-factor authentication help protect consumer data and reduce risk.
However, legacy systems and multiple touchpoints often make it difficult to manage user data or deliver a consistent experience. These gaps don’t just create friction, they can also introduce security concerns. Our team of designers and security professionals worked together to adapt the Microsoft solution to fit the needs of each client, without compromising usability or brand.
Chick-Fil-a
The client needed a proof of concept for a customized login experience. While Azure’s out-of-the-box security met their technical requirements, they wanted to explore how their distinct brand voice and visual style could carry through even the most utilitarian screens.
We designed a branded login experience that preserved the integrity of the security model while demonstrating how personality and clarity could coexist with compliance.
Cub foods
In addition to customized login screens, Cub Foods required a tailored user flow for their “My Account” experience. Each screen needed to meet strict security requirements while aligning with the client’s UX and UI standards.
We collaborated closely with development to ensure the resulting flows were not only secure, but functional, intuitive, and clearly branded across touchpoints.
Reflection
Designing within security-heavy systems reinforced how closely trust and clarity are linked. Even when the underlying technology is secure, users still need visible cues that help them understand what’s happening and why. This work shaped how I approach authentication flows going forward, treating them as core product experiences, not just technical necessities.
